The Psychology of Quitting Smoking
"Your Body Begins To Heal Itself The Ultimate Anti-Smoking Guide
To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did.
I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times.
From the Desk of Gabriella Roth
Can you relate to Mark Twain?
It's easy to quit smoking, I've done it hundreds of times! The trick is to
NOT SMOKE AGAIN!
You and millions of others have heard that comment before. There’s a good
possibility you have even said it yourself. And, while it does cause a
momentary chuckle, the truth is that deep down where your addiction lives, it is
no laughing matter. In fact, it’s downright painful.
We can give you all the statistics: Over 400,000 smoking related deaths in the US every year
47 million adults in the United States smoke
1.3 billion people around the world are smoking
Smoking population is expected to rise to 1.7 billion people in a few years
time
1 out of 2 will die from a smoking-related disease.
And more yet to be published
The World Health Organization has estimated that by year 2020, tobacco will
kill more people than any single disease in the world.
In spite of these statistics, smoking is on the rise. Why? It’s really very
simple. The answer is nicotine. Nicotine is a very powerful drug that when
inhaled via a cigarette, has a direct connection to the brain to release
dopamine. Dopamine gives you a brief sense of euphoria.
Several experts believe
smoking is only about 10% physical addiction and a huge 90% psychological
addiction. Your body will recover fairly quickly from nicotine withdrawals (the
worst symptoms usually subside in three days or less), but your psychological
dependence on cigarettes can be a lot harder to overcome.
Smoking Affects Your Let's take a closer look at this problem. Smoking has an injurious effect on almost all body parts. We know it affects your lungs most adversely and even the most addicted smokers know the risk of cancer. But, there are other effects that you might not be aware of. Did you know that cigarette smoking affects you from your head to your toes. . .just take a look at this list!
My Amazon Picks
Discover something surprising in that list? Many people do. How important to your health would it be to uncover some of the hidden effects of smoking? When it comes to the subject of stopping smoking, there is no one set answer for everyone. It would be simple if there were, wouldn't it? Even though smoking is truly a world-wide pandemic, there are no short cuts to stopping it. It takes guts and knowledge. Now you can get that knowledge You have to supply the guts. One way to fight this dependency is to do a little self-analysis before giving up cigarettes. Make a list and call it "Why I Started Smoking". Next to it make another list and call it "Why I Want to Quit Smoking". In the first list, put down all the reasons you can remember why you started smoking in the first place. Was it peer pressure? Was it Rebellion? Did it make you look cool? Did it make you feel like an adult? Truly try to remember the exact reasons why you started smoking and write them all down. Look over your list. Do any of those reasons still relate to your life today? Highly unlikely. If you're like most people, you will see that your reasons for smoking no longer apply. In fact, they are seem to be just silly, and are, without doubt, outweighed by the risks to your health and your family's well-being. So let's move on to your second list ... Why do you want to quit smoking? This may seem a little obvious, but is really more difficult than you may think. You really need to take some time to think about this one. Don't just list the obvious health reasons. You've been reading the Surgeon General's warnings for years and it’s had not affect, so you need to come up with reasons that truly are important to you. What most people write down will NOT help you quit smoking ...
Although those are all good reasons, they are only “possibilities”, not specific reasons. Sure you MIGHT get lung cancer, you MIGHT have a heart attack or a stroke, you MIGHT die young and miss out on seeing your grandchildren grow up... ...or you MIGHT NOT! The chances of you breaking a strong psychological addiction based on what MIGHT happen, is not going to make you quit. Your mind will work hard to talk you into it won't happen to you! So rather than probabilities, list any health problems that you are experiencing right now. Your list should consist of things in your life that you are truly unhappy about and are STRONGLY MOTIVATED to change. To break your psychological dependence, you need an arsenal of new thoughts and desires that are stronger than your desire to smoke! Why Do I Want To Quit Smoking? Some of the reasons you might want to put on this list could be …
Do you see yourself in any of the items listed; can you relate to any of them? You probably have many more reasons of your own, but these may help you get started. You should find as many compelling and emotional reasons to quit smoking as you can think of and write them all down. If you can re-train your mind to think of smoking as stupid and self-destructive, you're almost sure to succeed. And if you need something to do with your hands ... try knitting This isn't some trite collection of “do’s and don'ts,” although you may find some of those inside. You also won't find this guide is just a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” luring you into buying some expensive “stop smoking kit” that will cost you an arm and a leg.
What you will find inside is:
As we mentioned, there is no "pat" answer to this epidemic problem. The reasons for starting the habit are as wide and diversified as the people who smoke. It stands to reason, therefore, that the reasons to quit are equally diverse. That is why there is no such thing as one size fits al! What works for one person may not for another. There are even methods that you probably have never heard of. COPING WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL Dizziness may occur during the first one or two days. Take a quick break, it will pass. Headaches may appear at any time during the first weeks. Try to relax. Take any usual remedy for headache, a cold cloth on the back of your neck, or relieve the stress by taking a short walk. Tiredness may occur during the first few weeks, but if you meditate or relax during the first few weeks, it will pass. Coughing may actually increase during the first few days, simply because the residue from the smoke has not been flushed from your system. Tightness in the chest may occur in the first few days. Rest and take deep breaths, it will go away. Sleeping problems may occur in the first few days. Try to stay away from drinks that have a high caffeine content, try not to exercise too strenuously in the hours prior to bedtime. A hot bath prior to retiring at night may also be helpful. Constipation may occur in the first month after you quit. If this occurs, eat foods with a high fiber content, drink plenty of fluids, and do some light exercise. Concentration may tend to wander during the first few weeks. Be ready for this, take a break or do something physical for a short period of time.
