"Would You Recognize
the Early Warning Signs of Depression?"
Discover How to
Win the War
Against Depression and Its Dangerous Threats
Depression is one of the most common illness
in America. It has been reported that over 9.5 million Americans suffer
from some depression almost every six months.
If you've been suffering from mild to severe
depression on a recurring basis you need to learn more and learn it fast!
Listen very carefully and I will tell you
how you can pinpoint the warning signs and nip the problem in the bud before it
becomes a life-threatening condition.
First things
first!
What is depression? The definition is a
state of mind which results in a serious. long-term lowering of enjoyment of
life or inability to visualize a happy future.
Depression is a period of feeling "the blues"
which lasts longer than several weeks and may include thoughts of self-inflicted
injury or suicide.
Pretty scary isn't it?
Depression
is a serious disorder and should never be ignored. You need to know the early
warning signs and the symptoms that accompany this illness.
Just tune in to your evening news and you
will see the results of depression. Parents and family members who didn't have a
suspicion that their loved one suffered from depression, missed
the tell-tale early signs of detection.
This appears to be true of our youth. It
seems like not a day goes by that we don't learn of another teen or even pre-teen,
commit a violent act that stemmed from a state of severe depression.
How is a parent to know? And if you ARE
fortunate enough to detect the depression, what is your next step? This is
extremely important when it come to our children.
Because some of the symptoms are so
illusive, they can be easily overlooked in our busy day to day activities. We may push the
thoughts to the back of our minds and decide to have that discussion
"tomorrow". Sadly, sometimes "tomorrow" just does not come.
Some of the major signs of depression
are: prolonged sadness and lethargy; hopelessness and pessimism; feelings of
guilt, worthlessness and helplessness; loss of interest in enjoyed activities;
fatigue, tiredness, listlessness; loss of appetite and not sleeping enough;
trouble with concentration, making decisions, bad memory; lack of interest
causes inattentiveness; difficulty concentrating on anything; incapable of
deciding on or about anything; and problems remembering that happened or what
others said.
The most telltale sign of depression
is the loss of interest in things that are normally enjoyed. This lack of
interest causes inattention, difficulty concentrating, difficulty in making
any decisions about anything, and difficulty remember what happened or what
others said.
Not getting enough sleep, or sleeping too much, is also a
telltale sign of depression.
The lack of sleep results in lack of physical energy and could lead to
physical illness.
If you have feelings of sadness or hopelessness then here's a
list of what you should do to try to alleviate these feelings and get back to
your happy self.
Make sure you get enough sunshine, or
light. The body creates the hormone melatonin, which causes feelings of
lethargy and unhappiness, because it's not getting enough light. Melatonin is
secreted by your body in the dark. So if your not getting enough sunlight,
your body is producing too much melatonin, and you begin to feel sluggish.
Stay busy. Do the things you enjoy. If you stay busy you won't
notice those feelings of depression.
Setting a goal, striving towards it with determination and perseverance, will
keep your mind occupied.
Take the time to have a little fun. A hot bath; soothing
music; a massage; relax. Relaxing and taking a break from the daily stresses
in your life is important to your overall wellbeing and will make you feel
better.
Make sure you eat healthy foods. Lots of fruits of and
vegetables, meat, poultry, and fish should be part of your daily diet. Watch
the amount of sugar and caffeine and alcohol you use. These are only short
term 'solutions' to feelings of depression
and once the the effects wear off you'll feel even worse than before.
Exercise is the number one factor in preventing depression.
When you exercise your body produces more endorphins. These endorphins are the
chemicals that reduce stress and create happiness. All you have to do is go
for a walk, ride a bike, play a sport that you enjoy, even dancing. You don't
have to go to the gym if you don 't want to!
One more important factor is a social life. Being with friends
will make you feel better and your friends will give you moral support
whenever you need it. Hugging, a pat on the back, always makes you feel
better. The simple power of touch. Not only will a loving and caring
relationship with your family and friends make you feel more secure and happy,
it will also boost your immune system.
Any signs of depression
should always be taken seriously. If you suspect you or a loved one may be
depressed, don't put off helping them till tomorrow. Tomorrow may never come.
Serious depression can lead to suicide. If you are feeling depressed for two
weeks or more seek help. If you don't, it will only get worse. Seek a
therapist and talk out your problems and issues with him. You will be
surprised at how helpful this therapy is and you'll start feeling a lot
better. If you need to take an antidepressant, find a reputable psychiatrist,
talk to him, and take any medications he may prescribe. There is no shame in
this.
Anyone Can Have It
Depression has no boundaries. Rich, poor,
fat, thin, young or old. Depression does not discriminate.
What I hope to share with you is helping you
detect the early signs of depression in yourself or loved ones.
This should be a major concern in helping yourself and others to overcome
depression before it becomes severe.

mind.
It is true that a lot of things make us
depressed and sad once in a while - death of a family member, joblessness,
heartbreak, etc.
And it is very natural to feel bad about it.
We've all been there, I'm sure!
But what's unnatural and unhealthy is
becoming miserable about certain things for over a long period of time. Some people
even feel depressed for no explainable reason at all!

Very informative and written with understanding.
I think it fits a need in the community as there is such a high rate
of depression in the world today.
With the ever changing roles and expectations putting pressure to bear
on everyone, young and old, more and more people feel displaced and unsure of
their position in society making them ripe for self esteem and depression
issues.
This book gives the guidance and support required to make the
depressed person able to accept his or her condition without feeling shame or
weakness, and is then able to confidently seek the help and reassurance they
need.
Well written.

Girls, especially teenagers, suffer from depression a lot more than boys. The
message they are receiving from TV commercials, TV shows, magazines, and even peers, is the importance of beauty.
This translates into weight - being thin is a priority for many girls. They feel they
aren't accepted by their
peers if they don't keep up with the latest trends and diets. They tend to be
promiscuous and most end up with an
eating disorder or a
sexually transmitted disease - which they may not
even be aware they have until it's full blown.
With all these pressures on a teenage girl, it's no wonder they become depressed.
Is there a solution?
Yes! Albeit it a long term one.
Fathers come into play in the life a girl from the time they are born. They need to
take an active role in the lives of their daughters. The need to show affection -
physical as well as emotion - from the time the girl is born, and especially during the
teenage years.
Fathers are a daughter's first love.
Fathers are a daughter's hero.
Fathers: your daughter is not going to make this easy for you. But you have to remain strong
in guiding her, teaching her, but most of all letting her know that you love her, even if
you disagree; even if she fights you every step of the way. She won't tell you, but she will
be happy that you laid down the rules and stuck by them, because she will realize that you
did it because you love her.
So fathers, stick by your guns ... it will be worth it in the end!
There IS ALWAYS LIGHT at the end of the
tunnel!
So don't lose hope! Every problem has a
solution, and depression happens to be one dilemma that you can
overwhelmingly conquer, with the proper help and information.

You Have ONLY ONE Life
and ONLY ONE Chance to Be Happy
You only have one life and only one chance
to be happy and healthy. You owe it to yourself to protect your psychological
wellbeing as well as your physical wellbeing. Depression is a devastating
disease. You need to get out of it, to lead a happy, healthy and normal
life.
You only have one life.
Don't sacrifice your
personality, "who you are", in a caustic relationship that can only
result in mere existence. Don't stay with a partner who is toxic to your
emotions; don't change yourself for that partner because you will not have a happy and
peaceful relationship.
You only have one life.
Stress can also
cause depression. Try to avoid stressful situations as best as you can. If you do
face situations that cause you stress, such as losing your job, getting a divorce,
or even the general stresses involved in raising children and keeping house,
then seek the help you need. Even a good friends ear can help relief some,
if not all, of the stress.
You only have one life.
Don't use alcohol or
drugs to relieve your feelings of depression. In the end they only deepen the
depression and you could very easily become addicted without even realizing
it. Seek the help you need.
You only have one life.
Never be ashamed to
seek help for your depression. Never be ashamed to offer your help to
someone who is depressed. Help is available for everyone and more than one form. Take
advantage of it, seek it out, and get the help that you need.
You only have one life.
You owe it to
yourself to be happy. Take care of your psychological needs too. It is just as
important as your physical health. After all, everyone is entitled to happiness ... and
a happy state of mind results in a healthier you!

P.S.
Chronic and major
depression affects twice as many women as men. Women accept depression
as a result of things that didn't work out in their lives and tend not to have
the stigma associated to seeking help. Men, on the other hand, regard depression
as a sign of weakness, and don't get the help they need.
Don't run the risk of missing the telltale signs of depression in yourself or
your loved ones. Get the answers you need to determine if the depression is
serious and requires professional help.

P.P.P.S. On a personal note, in the past year alone, four teenagers
that I knew, committed suicide as a direct result of
depression. If you have the slightest inkling that your teen or loved one may
be depressed, do something about it now, pay attention to their needs, before
it's too late.
