"Is Your Child's Behavior Out of Control? "What's Wrong With Me? - Dealing With ADHD" I've done all the research and hard work for you! Know the Symptoms of ADHD
From: Gabriella Roth Dear ADHD Friend, It's a beautiful Indian summer day. Crisp cool air in the morning that gives way to warm shirtsleeve weather as the day progresses. The trees are giving just a hint of the brilliant colors their leaves will show in just another week or two.
Wearily, you plop yourself down in a kitchen chair after hanging up the phone. You lay your head down on the table and try as you might you just can't stop the flood of tears. Once the sobbing begins to subside, you begin to process the words you just heard. His teacher has just labeled your son, the child of your heart, "incorrigible". This is the third such call in as many weeks and school has just begun! This time the threat was very real. Either there are some rapid changes or he will be suspended permanently! The teacher even had the audacity to suggest you contact your pediatrician! Reluctantly, you consider the escalating situation at school and make the decision to take him in for a checkup. With a heavy heart you walk to the phone and call the pediatrician. Luckily, she has had a cancellation and you can get him in the next day. Does this sound familiar? The same scenario is played out over and over again in various degrees every day. No particular country or socio-economic level is immune. What your mother will discover is that her child is a victim of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. While it is not specific to age or gender, it is more frequently diagnosed in children and that it occurs in young boys more often than girls. Do you recognize your son in Mark? Mark, age 14, has more energy than most boys his age. But then, he's always been overly active. Starting at age 3, he was a human tornado, dashing around and disrupting everything in his path. At home, he darted from one activity to the next, leaving a trail of toys behind him. At meals, he upset dishes and chattered nonstop. He was reckless and impulsive, running into the street with oncoming cars, no matter how many times his mother explained the danger or scolded him. On the playground, he seemed no wilder than the other kids. But his tendency to overreact--like socking playmates imply for bumping into him--had already gotten him into trouble several times. His parents didn't know what to do. Mark's doting grandparents reassured them, 'Boys will be boys. Don't worry, he'll grow out of it.' But he didn't. If you are concerned that you, your child or another loved one may have this disorder, you owe it to yourself to get the answers you need. ADHD - Curse or Blessing? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder of childhood, estimated to affect 3 to 5 percent of school-aged children. Two to three times as many boys as girls are affected by ADHD. Research shows that ADHD tends to run in families. The basic symptoms of ADHD include developmentally inappropriate levels of attention, concentration, activity, distractibility, and impulsivity. Children with ADHD usually have impaired functioning in peer relationships and multiple settings including home and school. ADHD has also been shown to have long-term adverse effects on academic performance, vocational success, and social-emotional development. There are Six Types of ADHD. The Classic ADHD symptoms include lack of attention, easily distractible, disorganized and maybe a little hyperactivity, restlessness and impulsivity. The Inattentive type of ADHD is exactly that - inattentive and also disorganized. The Over-focused ADHD has difficulty shifting attention from one form of activity to another; has negative thoughts; tends to be obsessive; worries too much; is not flexible; and tends to be oppositional and augmentative. Temporal Lobe ADHD symptoms include lack of attention; irritability; aggression; tends to have "dark" thoughts; mood swings; and is very impulsive. Most children in this category are defiant, highly disobedient; and tend to have trouble learning as well have bad handwriting. Limbic System ADHD symptoms are inattention; chronic low-grade depression; tend to be negative have low energy levels and have feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. The Ring of Fire type of ADHD is probably the most problematic. The symptoms are taken to the extreme in inactiveness, distractibility, anger, and irritability. Tendency to be sensitive the environment around them; extremely verbal, oppositional and very possibly have cyclical moodiness. Do you know which type of ADHD you are? Do you know which type your child is? In order to treat ADHD properly, you need to know. ADHD Has Reached Epidemic Proportions ADHD does not have clear-cut physical symptoms that can be measured or seen through x-rays or lab tests. Only certain characteristic behaviors identify ADHD - and even these vary from person to person. In the United States ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders diagnosed in children. As a matter of fact, 50-percent of all amphetamine (Adderall) and methylphenidate (Ritalin) are prescribed by pediatricians. The age range of 40-percent of all prescriptions is between the ages of 3 to 9 year-olds. Approximately 6-million children are prescribed medication for attention deficit disorder. Boys are three times more likely to be "labeled" or diagnosed with ADHD than girls. Attention Deficit Disorder in the United States has been declared a national epidemic. There are some people, however, who believe ADHD is a "personality type", not a disease, and, in fact, the behavior is normal in children of this age group. There are many physicians and parents alike who believe that the symptoms of ADHD are over-diagnosed and medications are over-prescribed. Many "newer" physicians believe parents need to study facts and findings of ADHD and research the positive and negative effects of medications like Adderall, Ritalin, and other ADHD drugs, before making a decision to medicate their child.
My daughter was constantly fidgeting, couldn't sit still for a minute! She got frustrated very easily when it came to cleaning her room. She couldn't remember simple instructions and was always so disorganized it drove me crazy! Then one day, while I was surfing the web, I came across this website about ADHD and to my surprise realized that maybe she had ADHD. So I bought the book. Thanks Gabriella for the great information. It really helped me know how to help my daughter. At age 17, Lisa still struggles to pay attention and act appropriately. But this has always been hard for her. She still gets embarrassed thinking about that night her parents took her to a restaurant to celebrate her 10th birthday. She had gotten so distracted by the waitress' bright red hair that her father called her name three times before she remembered to order. Then before she could stop herself, she blurted, 'Your hair dye looks awful!'
In elementary and junior high school, Lisa was quiet and cooperative but often seemed to be daydreaming. She was smart, yet couldn't improve her grades no matter how hard she tried. Several times, she failed exams. Even though she knew most of the answers, she couldn't keep her mind on the test. Her parents responded to her low grades by taking away privileges and scolding, "You're just lazy. You could get better grades if you only tried." One day, after Lisa had failed yet another exam, the teacher found her sobbing, "What's wrong with me?" There is much controversy over what treatment, if any, should be pursued when dealing with someone with ADHD. Many schools would be happy if all ADHD children were medicated, while some parents would prefer a less radical approach. What if you are an adult with newly diagnosed ADHD? How do you know if you were correctly diagnosed and what treatment should YOU pursue, if any. Then there's Henry, an appealingly absent-minded guy who goes from one project to another without completing any one of them; and from job to job as a result of his carelessness. Henry can't explain why he does what he does. Are you like Henry? Henry loves puttering around in his shop, for years he has had dozens of unfinished carpentry projects and ideas for new ones he knew he would never complete. His garage was piled so high with wood, he and his wife joked about holding a fire sale.
Every day Henry faced the real frustration of not being able to concentrate long enough to complete a task. He was fired from his job as stock clerk because he lost inventory and carelessly filled out forms. Over the years, afraid that he might be losing his mind, he had seen psychotherapists and tried several medications, but none ever helped him concentrate. He saw the same lack of focus in his young son and worried. It is no wonder people are confused about this controversial subject. Believe it or not, there is actually a good side to ADHD. As a matter of fact, I would say it's a very strong side. All you have to do is harness the power of ADHD and you will most definitely be a winner! While ADHD/ADD is looked upon as a mental “disorder”, it is in fact, a gift! The fact alone that you are different from the “average” person allows you to become outrageously successful in anything you choose to do! People with ADHD are risk takers; which means that your chances of becoming a millionaire or even a billionaire are about 300% greater than your “average” person! Because of your genetic makeup you crave stimulation just to feel alive! Therefore, you’re more likely to seek thrills, take risks, be highly creative, bolder, and be very charismatic. This temperament, the genetic difference in ADHD, is the very same that creates rock stars, inventors, artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, leaders, and billionaires. While thrill-seeking is an essential quality in rock stars; those with ADHD are 300% more likely to start their own company – AND only people with the courage to start their own company will ever become self-made billionaires. The key to getting really rich is taking risks. So if you have ADHD you probably love to take risks. Why does ADHD allow some people to achieve great success while others don’t’? ADHD therapies try to convert you to “normal” standards of acceptance in society, instead of helping you harness the greatness of ADHD. These therapies attempt to turn you into a 9-5 office worker. But why should you struggle to be “normal” when you are genetically designed to be a hugely successful artist, entrepreneur, athlete, inventor, leader, or leader? The genius of ADHD isn’t encouraged or taught. The symptoms and behavior of those with ADHD are overwhelming and even disturbing to the “normal” population because they don’t have your energy and creativity to approach life; so the genius and brilliance of those with ADHD is suppressed. Ninety-eight percent of all greatly successful people have the ADHD gene. Among them you may be surprised to know are: John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Ozzy Osbourne, P-Diddy, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and Bill Clinton. You are in good company!
